I sure hope the fishing for me is better this year. I all but gave up fishing on the beaches of Cape Cod. The seals seem to be ruling the surf. Before the end of the year I did manage to fish the ponds a few times. Pictured is my buddy Harry who managed to get a small salmon in Big Cliff. My last fishing trip of 2009 I managed to get one small rainbow trout. Now with all the snow and cold fishing is on hold. I am hoping to get some ice fishing if it stays cold enough. I am eager to get some of those delicious yellow perch.

8/17/09 Fluke fishing trip

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5oIcjEi4sDw/So04Qdwrz8I/AAAAAAAAALE/gqOQupYm868/s320/Helen+H+Fluke+Trip+5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372011786040758210" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5oIcjEi4sDw/So04P9zWzII/AAAAAAAAAK8/DfX5TeRwdzk/s320/Harry+just+landed+one.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372011777462029442" />
Last Monday I went on an all day Fluke fishng trip on the Helen H out of Hyannis. The fishing off the beach has continued to be poor as it was last year with many seals and few fish. The plovers have forced closure of the beaches to vehicles much earlier than in the past and a spring NE storm has done lots of damage to the beach. More of the camps on the southern portion of Nauset have been destroyed. I have managed to take a few decent fish from Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Town Cove. On the gardening front I have had less problem with critters so far this year, but the very wet spring slowed up the sun loving plants like the tomatoes. With the recent nice sunny days they are now growing nicely. I have over 100 tomatoes planted and am looking for a large crop to stock up spaghetti sauce, salsa, tomato soup for the winter. What I have left over will be given away or sold at the Orleans Farmers' Market.

Here are a couple of pictures showing some of my ice fishing catches. The only upside to the weather has been my ability to do some ice fishing which I have not done since I moved to the Cape in 2005. I found a couple of small ponds with enough ice to fish and have managed to catch a few of my favorite eating fish, Yellow Perch. What great eating! I have fried them and made Poor Man's shrimp with the fillets. For those of you unfamiliar with Poor Man's Shrimp it is made by cutting up some perch fillets and putting them in a pot of boiling water for 5 minutes. Take them out, strain, and rinse with cold water. Then put in the refrigerator to chill them down. They tend to toughen up as they cool and can be eaten like shrimp with seafood red sauce or any sauce you like. They make great hor d'oeuvres and keep well under refrigeration. In my search for perch I caught a few LM Bass and Pickerel. I looks like the weather is warming which will make the ice unsafe, so I guess my ice fishing is done for the season. I am ready for spring so bring it on.

Happy New Year to all

Woo wishes everyone a happy New Year. I usually don't catch much, but so far this year I have gotten at least 1 trout on every trip. In a couple of weeks the state will stock Salmon in Sheep's Pond and Big Cliff Pond. Well, I must report this was the worst fishing season I have ever had at the Cape. I think I have pretty much finished salt water fishing and have a grand total of 2 stripers from the beach and my total count for the year is about 70 fish. Most of the fish I caught were small fish from Pleasant Bay. Most fishermen on the Cape had similar results. The seals, lack of bait, commercial fishing, and a general depletion of the striper population seems to be the problem. I just wonder what next year will bring. It was a good year on the gardening front. My crops were great and I enjoyed my first year selling at the Orleans Farmers Market. I was even successful selling my worms and worm products at the market. I have increased the number of worm boxes I am using because of the demand at the market and my need for additional worm compost for all my gardens. I am now gearing up for sales on Woo's Lures by making lots of darts and spoons, so I am ready when the orders start coming in. Soon it will be time for all the Holidays. Now is time to start raking all those leaves. Good Luck to all.

Wow - Woo finally caught a 2008 striper from the surf

9/5/08 - Linda and I took a ride to Nauset Inlet yesterday to take a few casts. Surf fishing has been so poor this year I have been fishing very little. Beach closures due to the Plovers, too many seals and a lack of fish have dampened my motivation. I have been taking a few fish in Pleasant Bay lately, but until yesterday I had not taken one fish from the Ocean. Since In the past I usually have hundreds of stripers from the surf yearly, this indeed has been a terrible fishing season for me. I fished for only an hour just as it was getting dark. I was using my 6" silver Lewy plastic bait for about 1/2 hour without a touch when I finally had a couple of very light hits. I keep on plugging that Lewy and finally convinced at 22 inch stiper to end my famine. After a quick release, I took another cast and hooked a little better fish which actually pulled some drag. It was a hair under the legal 28" limit, but I would have release it anyway. I had one more light hit and that was it for the night. Those two bass, the first surf fish of the season, did put a smile on Woo's old face. Maybe Linda should come fishing with me more often. She brought me some luck.

Family Olympics a great success

Here are a couple of shots from the Lawrence/Harroun Family Olympics held last weekend at the Sterling Inn in PA. See picture.

Jim and Sue got Woo fishing again.

Thanks to Jim and Sue I had some very enjoyable fishing last week on their wonderful Maritime Skiff. What a great boat! It is perfect for fishing the Bay. Fly Guy performed beautifully on the bow with a number of nice fish. The weather was great as was the fishing. We even took a couple of small keeper size stripers along with some very large blues. As usual Sue got the largest fish as well as providing good sandwiches. Above are a couple of picture of Jim and Sue with their catches. Jim tried to block out Sue's face with the fish, but she managed to peek through. Jim's bass was a keeper on the fly rod, but we did release it.

Sunday 5/25/08 Fishing Contest

Sunday a few more fish were taken by the kids. I missed fishing there last year. The first day fishing I got my first shad of the year, a nice roe, above the bridge at Dingman's Ferry. I fished my old haunts on the river from New York all the way down to the Portland power plant. The fishing was very slow and I only got 7 shad in 6 days fishing. I also got a couple of smallies, a perch, and 2 chubs. I fished with a number of my old fishing buddies which was great fun even though the results were disappointing. The weather and river conditions were outstanding. Now I will have to concentrate my shad fishing in the New England area.

First Striper of the year

Just like last year I caught my first striper of the year on April 16th in Pleasant Bay. Not a big fish, but it does have stripes. I actually caught 2 fish that day. I also went trout fishing in Bakers Pond in Orleans and caught a nice tiger trout and lost a large fish. Today 2 days later I got 5 small strpers like the first one I caught. I hope the large fish show up soon. I am planning a trip to go to PA to fish for shad in the Delaware River next week. Hopefully there will be some shad to be had. The weather finally warmed up into the 60's today. About time! It was nice to be able to work in the yard without freezing.

The Cold spring is hanging on at the Cape

Well after about a week it finally got warm enough (low 40's) to do a little more work outside. I turned over some gardens and planted more onions and shallots. I continue to plant some flats of vegetable and my tomatoes have germinated as can be seen in the picture below. During all this cold weather my worms continue to eat garbage and produce valuable casting which I will use on my plants in the green house. The red wigglers are also involved in a little mating action as can be seen in the picture to the left. That means more baby worms to eat up all my garbage and produce casting. I am knee deep in orders for shad lures, so I am very busy making lures and processing the orders. Not all bad, but once fishing starts Woo's Lures will take the back seat. Will it ever get warm this spring? This cold weather must be a result of Al Gore's global warming. Maybe he should give his award back. Shad are in the rivers in the mid-atlantic states, but have not hit New England rivers as yet. I can't wait. Before too long the schoolie stripers should show up, and I will have to choose between Shad fishing or Striper fishing.

Gardening season begins at Cape Cod

Well, it has been and continues to be a cold wet spring at Cape Cod. />Ever since I was a little brat I liked worms. At 5 I had a pet imaginary worm named "Wormy". Now that I am in my 70's I am back at it. Last year I started vermicomposting with a pound of red wiggler worms which I purchased. This bunch of worms has eaten lots of garbage over the year and produced about 15 pounds of vermicompost or worm castings which is an excellent source of nutrients for plants. It will not burn like chemical fertilizer and can be used as is mixed into the soil or used as a liquid by adding 2 table spoons of compost to 1 quart of water. Since I use worms on occasion when fishing the local ponds, I decided to try growing some European Nightcrawlers which are larger than the red wigglers and better for fishing. They can be grown in boxes just like the red wigglers and they also eat garbage and product vermicompost. The two videos show the Europeon Nightcrawler worms when I first introduced them to the box and then about 10 minutes later after they were mostly buried into the bedding. The videos are about as exciting as watching grass grow. Stay tuned to see how the worms survive.

Local Fly Tying Class

A friend, Joe Oclair started s professional fly tying class at the Cultural Center in Yarmouth. Click the link below to veiw the video. This is the reason years ago I stopped taking an annual trip to NC to catch big bluefish in early December. I personally saw bluefish taken this way which was very upsetting. Particularly when the fishing on the beach was very slow. The NC economy no longer gets the $1000/year I used to spend on my trips to the Outer Banks. How long will it take these states to realize the financial benefits they gain from the recreational fishing community.

<a The shad season has started in Florida and orders have been coming in. I have been doing some salmon fishing with my friend, Harry, but have only caught a couple of trout so far. The conditions have been cold and windy most days, and I only last a couple of hours at a time. Harry on the other hand is obsessed about getting that big salmon, and he fishes long and hard when he is not working. It has paid off for him as you can see in the picture above. This nice salmon 12 lb 7 oz. was taken on 1/5/08. He got another large fish the next day. I have some problems with my truck which have slowed my fishing efforts the last few days. I hope to give it a try tomorrow if there is no ice on the ponds.

Above is a new addition to the family. My brother Les' first grandbrat Lily Anna O'Driscoll was born on 12/20/07. Mom and Dad, Carrie and Tim are still smiling as is Grandma, Laurie. I must admit she is a cute baby. I hope she likes to fish.

Fishing in the first snow of the year on the Cape

I fished last Thursday morning with some friends in the freshwater at Cape Cod. Last year at this time I was doing quite a bit of fresh water fishing in the local ponds. I did manage to fish last Saturday at Big Cliff and got my first two trout of the winter season both on bait. They were small rainbows. My pursuit of stripers has ended for the year. I ended up with only 765 bass which was way down from my 1400+ fish in 2006. Very disappointing season for me. I will continue to fish the ponds all winter either on the ice or open water. I would love to find some nice fat yellow perch through the ice. Stay tuned.

Thanksgiving Day at the Cape

Thanksgiving day was a beautiful day at Cape Cod. Linda and I spent the afternoon riding Nauset Beach. We started on the north side and checked out Nauset Inlet. The surf was riled up and a picturesque site. A beautiful shade of blue. The inlet was calm and the gulls were feeding on bait. I fished a little, but had no luck. Linda spent her time gathering rocks while I was casting my lewy. Only a few people were on the beach. We had it pretty much to ourselves. Next we decided to check out the south side and see the new inlet. We only saw a couple of vehicle out there. We drove to the end and parked at #7. From there we walked out to the inlet. A strong SW wind made walking a little difficult, but the old people made it. The return trip was easier with the wind behind us. It was sad viewing the damaged camps, and there was nothing left of the one camp that was completely destroyed. I guess the broken pieces of that camp had been removed. It was shocking to see the bulkhead on the beach side where I used to fish was completely gone. Those other camps there sure are living on borrowed time since the dunes in most part have been leveled. Who knows what Mother Nature has in store for the beach this winter. All in all it was a very relaxing nice day on the beach.

Linda sadly checking out the damage. I have one vine which produced 2.5 spackle buckets full of grapes. That comes to close to 50 lbs of grapes. I think I got about 2.5 gallons of grape juice which was fabulous. The juice is so rich that it can be cut with water which makes it last longer. It takes time picking and cleaning the grapes, but it is well worth the effort. My tomato crop is now over 2700, and I still have some to pick. We are still enjoying them and Linda made some tomato soup today. I have also given away lots to friends and neighbors. Fishing remains very slow especially in the ocean. The only concentration of fish I have found in the last couple of weeks was in Pleasant Bay where there was tons of bait. I tried the Canal yesterday. I caught no fish and ended up calling 911 when I felt faint due to over heating when I walked a long way and was overdressed. I guess I am getting too old for late night solo trips. My thanks to the Bourne Fire and Rescue squad who checked me out and gave me a ride back to my vehicle. I have taken most of my Hibiscus to winter over in the barn. Hopefully most of them will still be alive come spring. All the geraniums are hang upside down dry root in the barn. They were fine this spring when I did this last year. That's it for now from Loon's Landing.

Grape crop is in.

The single grape vine that is growing on my outside shower is loaded with grapes. I picked a whole spackle bucket full and decided to make some grape juice. It was a little time consuming picking and washing the grapes, but was worth the effort. I mashed the grapes and boiled them at a low simmer for about 10 minutes. Then I tried using a tomato deseeder to remove the pits and skin. That did not work well and was very messy. I ended up just straining the juice out which took time, but produced a nice tasty clean grape juice. I will definitely do it again and there are plenty more grapes on the vine. Maybe I will try some wine next year even though I am not a wine drinker. I guess grape jelly is another option. It was a great weekend even though we never got to the beach or do any fishing. My one attempt to go fishing was thwarted by my truck 4 wheel drive failure. We ate lots of tomatoes which helped use up my crops. So far my tomato crop count is at 1405. To date I have frozen 26 quarts of spaghetti sauce. I plan to do another 12 quarts then I will start giving tomatoes away to the neighbors. I am hoping the fishing will pick up this fall and the mung will leave the beaches.

Load of Spaghetti Sauce cooking

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5oIcjEi4sDw/Rs7QROaGBhI/AAAAAAAAAB0/mLsOGM7c8Ww/s320/IMGP3546.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5102244422201247250" />
This is the first load of spaghetti meat sauce for 2007. I am hoping the action has improved. Now all the beaches are open to oversand vehicles. Goodbye to the plovers. May the natives in Central American enjoy their food which we protect so dearly. Started the day fishing Pleasant bay at day break. I got six bass fishing by the new inlet. Not great but at least I got some action fishing the outgoing tide. Lots of eel grass made the fishing a little tough. That night I went to Nauset inlet. I was so happy to see the beach was open even though there was some mung to hamper my efforts. I picked up 4 bass there including one keeper 29 inches. It is a sad situation when a 29 inch fish is a big deal. Will the big fish ever return to the beach or is the bass population really in trouble as I believe. I plan to start fishing more frequently as the fall approaches, but I must finish my french drain project.

Starting a new project

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5oIcjEi4sDw/RsMkYkoTVKI/AAAAAAAAABM/ZbYUsdr8jlQ/s320/Jim+diggign+French+Drain+ditch.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098959207681709218" />

Yesterday I started a new project to stop erosion of the lawn by the barn. Recently I counted the tomato plants I have scattered around my house in various gardens. I came up with 98 plants. Wow, that is a lot of tomatoes. I could easily have a crop of over 1000 tomatoes. That is one hell of a lot of tomato sauce. Maybe I will sell them on the Internet with my shallots. So far these plants are doing well and are loaded with green tomatoes. I guess old age is getting to me.

July Gardening Problems and Successes

Not all problems. Tomatoes are growing well and peppers are doing better. I have harvested some string beans, but some critters have been eating them. Zucs continue to be a mystery. Two hills have produced some nice ones, but new fruit is yellowing off and dying before it develops. Plants seem to be OK. Another hill in a different location is huge with lots of flowers, but no zucs are developing. I had same problem last year. Could it be the lack of bees? Broccoli never produced any big heads though I did get some good side shoots for eating. Caterpillars were a bad problem which I just did not keep after. They ended up destroying the plants. They also have been eating my turnips, but most of them are doing OK. Onions were great. Lots of scallions early, and I am harvesting mature onions now. I have been planting tomatoes where I pulled up the onions. I have back up tomato plants in my green house. I did this last year and even though I planted the tomatoes very late they still produced some fruit. My Shallots seem to be doing OK, and I will start harvesting them very soon. My asparagus garden is doing well, and I should be able to start picking them next year. They are the best veggie. They just keep coming up every year. Only problem is it takes a couple of years for the original plantings to mature so you can harvest. I am looking forward to my first ripe tomato. This is my most important crop since I make loads of spaghetti sauce every year. Also we have had company at the house. I went out this morning to Pleasant Bay and got 2 stripers. Both fish were about 25 inches - not too bad for this year. One bass came completely out of the water and landed on my Lewy hooking himself in the eye. It was a spectacular hook up since he hit right in front of me. Not a great morning, but enjoyable.
